1938-40 Hockey team

Girls Hockey Team, just before the outbreak of WW2.

Still known as Finaghy Public Elementary School, this picture just pre-dates the 1947 Education Act, when a new type of primary education, for pupils aged 5 to 11 years, was established. Hence, some of the girls pictured are as old as 14.  After 1947, at the end of their primary education, pupils could opt to take selection tests, the results of which were used to identify those who were believed to be best suited to the academic curriculum of grammar schools. And so it remains today.
